Swepstone Church

Welcome to St Peter's
serving the communities of Swepstone & Newton Burgoland

St Peter's is usually open on a Sunday for visitors and private prayer.

Services:

Services are usually at 10am on at least 2 Sundays per month. For service dates / times please check the calendar page of this website.
We usually have a Holy Communion on the 3rd Sunday and a less formal Morning Worship on the 1st Sunday of each month, led by a ministry team member.
We also hold a variety of different services for festivals and special events, some at 10am others at 4pm, led by members of the congregation. Swepstone Church is often chosen by wedding couples as the beautiful setting lends itself to the occasion. Church festivals are well attended, and the church is decorated following the seasons, saints’ days and special Sundays such as ‘Sea Sunday’. The Christmas Eve Crib service is also special; many families walk from Newton with torches and lanterns to take part.

Activities:

The church boasts a regular organist, a singing group 'Woodfield Singers' and also a team of bell-ringers.
The Woodfield Singers meet on Thursday evenings at Swepstone Church Hall, and sing regularly at churches across the Team for weddings and special services, and elsewhere when asked to sing at concerts. Our bell ringers group also ring for other churches in the Team. We have a Monday afternoon Craft Group which meets in the Church Hall and makes items for sale, the proceeds of which go to the upkeep of the Church Hall. Every 3rd Wednesday in the month we hold a Coffee and Chat event in the Church Hall. This is greatly appreciated by those who attend. The Advent 'lighting of the star'  is a popular event & we enjoy decorating the lovely church for occasional Flower or Christmas Tree Festivals in church.

Village Setting:

Swepstone and Newton are friendly caring villages where people look out for each other. Swepstone does not have a pub, so the church is the centre of the village and community. The villages are a mile apart and connected by farmland. Swepstone is the smaller of the two villages The villages complement one another. Swepstone has St. Peter’s church and a small church hall. Newton has a popular and successful state primary school and a Congregational church, as well as a pub, supposedly being the oldest in Leicestershire. The housing in both villages is varied in both size and age. There is a good community spirit. As well as worshipping together members of both villages support one another and come together to socialise and to raise money for the church.

Church Building:

Built in the 12th century St. Peter’s Church in Swepstone stands in a prominent position in the centre of the village. It can be seen for miles, particularly at Christmas when the tower is illuminated by large stars. Flowers are arranged and the church kept clean by willing volunteers. Visitors to the church describe it as welcoming and friendly. We encourage the wild life by leaving some area of the large churchyard free from cutting until late autumn. We have also planted a small group of apple trees to commemorate the coronation of King Charles.

Church Hall:

The church hall was once the one-roomed village school. The building is well used by many groups including mothers and toddlers, craft and sewing groups, meetings, parties of various types and, of course, the popular monthly coffee morning for the church.
