Please pray for the vital work of Christian Aid who work towards a world where families can escape the trap of poverty and fulfil their ambitions. We are invited to think about the plans we have for this coming week, month, and year, and give thanks that we are able to look ahead. Please pray for those whose lives are too uncertain to make plans.

Woodfield Team prayer

God our Father, you long to draw all people into your love.

Increase in number your church throughout the Woodfield Team; deepen us as followers and learners of Christ; and give us courage to share the good news of your kingdom.

We pray this in the power of your Spirit, to the glory of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

as we rejoice at your triumph,

fill your Church on earth with power and compassion,

that all who are estranged by sin

may find forgiveness and know your peace,

to the glory of God the Father.

Reading for 12th May – John 17.6-19 New International Version (UK)

Jesus prays for his disciples

6 ‘I have revealed you to those whom you gave me out of the world. They were yours; you gave them to me and they have obeyed your word. 7 Now they know that everything you have given me comes from you. 8 For I gave them the words you gave me and they accepted them. They knew with certainty that I came from you, and they believed that you sent me. 9 I pray for them. I am not praying for the world, but for those you have given me, for they are yours. 10 All I have is yours, and all you have is mine. And glory has come to me through them. 11 I will remain in the world no longer, but they are still in the world, and I am coming to you. Holy Father, protect them by the power of your name, the name you gave me, so that they may be one as we are one. 12 While I was with them, I protected them and kept them safe by that name you gave me. None has been lost except the one doomed to destruction so that Scripture would be fulfilled.

13 ‘I am coming to you now, but I say these things while I am still in the world, so that they may have the full measure of my joy within them. 14 I have given them your word and the world has hated them, for they are not of the world any more than I am of the world. 15 My prayer is not that you take them out of the world but that you protect them from the evil one. 16 They are not of the world, even as I am not of it. 17 Sanctify them by the truth; your word is truth. 18 As you sent me into the world, I have sent them into the world. 19 For them I sanctify myself, that they too may be truly sanctified.

Prayers for today:

We pray:

Eternal Lord, you are our creator and sustainer. We bring before you the needs of our church, our world, our communities, and ourselves.

  • Faithful God, your Son Jesus Christ prayed for his disciples, for you to protect and sanctify them. Help us to remember that Jesus still prays for us, his followers today and may we be strengthened by the knowledge that he has not forgotten us. May we live life in the same way as his disciples did at that time, knowing no sense of abandonment but patiently awaiting the promised gift of the Holy Spirit.
  • Creator God, we pray for our troubled world: its peoples and their leaders. We pray for those caught up in war, and violence, and hatred; especially the innocent victims of these evils and those who are persecuted because of their faith.
  • We pray for a more equitable world where we share resources fairly and work together. Please protect people of poorer countries from being exploited and underpaid for their labour just so that we can enjoy cheap luxury goods at their expense.
  • Father God, your Son remained with his disciples after his resurrection, teaching them to love all people as neighbours. Thank you for our families, friends and fellow Christians and for the people with whom we work or share our daily lives. We pray for those who are lonely, those isolated because of age or ill-health, and those who find it difficult to make friends or be accepted.
  • Loving God, we remember those who are sick, sad or lonely, and those who are brave and patient when things are going wrong. We pray that they may be aware of your comforting presence and know that in your hands they are safe and loved.
  • Heavenly Father, we raise before you all who have died and who are now with your ascended Son Jesus Christ.  We pray for those who have recently died, for their resurrection into Your kingdom and for those whose anniversary falls at this time.
  • Everlasting God, open our eyes to see You acting in our lives and our hearts, to understand not only what you do for us but what you call us to do to live the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
